My Life Changing Journey Into Eating Raw
I never imagined myself becoming a raw food nutrition expert. Until I was in my mid 20s, I didn’t even consider that my diet could effect my health – even though I had chronic depression, severe allergies and was 10 pounds overweight. I simply just didn’t make the connection between food and health. Many of my friends suffered from similar health problems, so nothing seemed to be that much out of order not at least until I met David.
David became my roommate in college and because of his example I ended up making one of the best decisions in my life. I still remember the exact moment it happened. I was sitting in my car and holding a turkey sandwich. I took a bite and while I was chewing, thought, “I don’t want to do this anymore.” I wadded the rest of the sandwich up, got out of the car and threw it in the trash can. I haven’t eaten meat since then.
I Thought Being A Vegetarian Was Healthier But…
That moment, more than any other single moment has defined the journey of my life. Eating a plant based diet has led me into some wonderful experiences that I simply wouldn’t have had as an omnivore. One of the first was noticing how differently I felt about animals. Shortly after I stopped eating them, I was on my mountain bike in a meadow near some cows. Normally I wouldn’t have thought twice about them, but that day I stopped and walked closer. As I approached, I saw for the first time in my life how beautiful cows are. And looking one of them in the eye for a moment, I felt a sense of freedom knowing that I would never eat her or any of her friends again. I no longer contributed to that kind of animal suffering and I felt really good about that.
Other revelations followed, including the fact that many of the world’s most brilliant and powerful people, ranging from Buddha to Pythagoras, to Leonardo Da Vinci, to Gandhi, to Albert Einstein have all been vegetarians.
Einstein once wrote: “Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.” I love that quote.
My Allergies And Chronic Low Energy Seemed Like They Would Never Get Better
Although I gained many new insights based upon the decision to leave off eating meat, I have to admit that I didn’t feel all that better physically for the first couple years. I still had a daily low level depression that a psychologist diagnosed as dysthymia. Being vegetarian didn’t make any difference in that. Also, during the late summer, my allergies to dust, weeds and pollen seemed to be getting worse and worse. And finally, I could never seem to lose that little extra bit of belly fat I carried.
Overall, I would say that I was just as healthy as a meat eater as I was as a vegetarian. Of course pizza and ice cream were all too common in my diet at that time.
Willing To Try Anything, I Even Gave Up All Dairy, And Eggs
Somewhere along the line I got a copy of the book “Diet For A New America” by John Robbins. Reading the stories of how milk cows and chickens are horribly abused in factory farms inspired me to stop eating all dairy products and all eggs. After about a month I started feeling a little bit better physically and emotionally. In particular I lost a few pounds and noticed that the depression was a little less present.
Based on those gains, I understood for the first time in my life that what we eat does make a difference in how we feel.
Still Something Was Missing
I continued as a vegan for another year and a half, and expected to feel better and better. But much to my disappointment I didn’t experience any major health improvements.
I felt like I had gone just about as far as I could in terms of changing my diet – not eating any animal products really seemed like the limit. So, I kind of gave up on hoping to radically improve my health and just kept on with my life.
Until I Discovered Eating Raw
And then one very fortunate day while I was living in Miami, Florida, I met Ryan and Marisa, a couple who were vegetarian like me, but with one big difference: they were raw food vegetarians. What drew me to them at first was the healthy glow coming from their skin, their eyes and their hair. I thought maybe they were somehow genetically special, but then I met other raw foodists in Miami who had a similar glow.
I was intrigued and after asking Ryan and Marisa a ton of questions about what to eat raw, how to eat raw, when to eat raw I decided to try eating raw for myself. Upon their recommendation, I gave myself one month to see if it made any difference.
During that month I ate 100% fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. I did share some amazing gourmet raw meals with Ryan, Marisa and other friends – things like raw lasagna, raw burgers, chocolate pie, and raw cheesecake – but for the most part I kept things simple. I usually had a big fresh fruit smoothie for breakfast, a big salad for lunch, some nuts and dried fruit for a snack and a variety of simple raw specialty dishes for dinner.
After Just 4 Weeks Eating Raw I Felt Better Than I Ever Had
The first few days of eating raw, my stomach was sometimes upset (later I found out that this is fairly common), but I made it through and never looked back. I started feeling better and better over the course of my 30 day raw experiment and by the end of the month I was hooked.
My extra belly fat of about 10 pounds was gone. I had more energy than I could remember. I slept about 6 hours a night and woke up feeling great. Aches in my left knee from an old football injury were gone. My sinuses were a lot less sensitive to dust or pollen. And, biggest of all, my chronic depression and low energy disappeared. I felt truly positive about life for the first time ever.

Getting Enough Raw Food Is Scientifically Proven To Lower Your Risk Of Disease
A simple search on the PubMed database, pulls up 16,784 recent articles on raw food. Most doctors who have done even a minimal research into nutrition agree that getting plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables decreases the likelihood that you’ll get a major disease. Here are a couple of examples of specific studies that demonstrate why doctors reach this conclusion.
- According to a study published in the May 1998 issue of the journal Epidemiology, researchers have found that a diet rich in raw vegetables lowers your risk of breast cancer, and eating lots of fruit reduces your risk for colon cancer.
- And according to a study published in the September 1996 issue of the British Medical Journal including fresh fruit as part of your daily diet has been associated with fewer deaths from heart attacks and related problems, by as much as 24%.
- Plus eating raw for 30 days in one study documented in a film called “Simply Raw,” reversed adult onset diabetes in 100% of cases!
Of All Animals On The Planet Only One Cooks Their Food And Only One Gets Degenerative Disease
It’s quite interesting that all animals in the wild eat all of their food raw. In that sense eating raw is nature’s way. Humans are the only animal to cook food. This fact alone is not significant. But when you consider that wild animals simply don’t get the same kinds of degenerative diseases that we do, it’s pretty eye opening. So, animals in the wild don’t get cancer, diabetes, fibromyalgia etc. and they are eating raw all the time.
There’s Even A Difference With Our Pets If We Feed Them Raw
One researcher provides some pretty strong evidence. Francis M. Pottenger, M.D. studied cats over a 10 year period to determine how food affects the body. One group of cats ate raw whole foods. The other ate the exact same food, except cooked. The results were startling. After only four generations, Pottenger found that while the raw food cats maintained good health, the cooked food cats were susceptible to skin lesions and allergies, lethargy, bad temper and shortened life spans. Dr. Pottenger would have continued the experiment, but after the 4th generation, the cooked food cats became sterile and diet out.
Eating Raw Helps The Body In 5 Specific Ways
- Fiber: Raw foods, especially leafy greens contain high levels of dietary fiber which is absolutely critical for digestion and elimination. The recommended daily allowance of dietary fiber is 27 grams, which is easy to achieve on a raw food diet. Fiber is only found in plant foods and is only valuable as a cleanser when it is raw. Cooked fiber becomes soft and passive and loses its magnetic cleansing properties.
- Enzymes: Raw food that has not been heated above 43C or 118F for any significant length of time is still full of life giving enzymes. Food enzymes help to break food down in the digestive tract fully and quickly, thus leaving the digestive system to function more smoothly and rapidly. Enzyme therapy is sometimes used to help people start a cleanse and regain their health.
- Water: Water is nature’s universal solvent, capable of breaking down anything in its path. Raw foods contain high levels of water – up to 85% for some fruits. This helps digestion and prevents dehydration, which allows for smooth and regular elimination. Dehydration is considered to be a major cause of chronic constipation. With a diet high in raw foods this is not an issue.
- Chlorophyll: Chlorophyll from leafy greens is a fantastic deodorizer and detoxifier. Fresh green juice made from grasses and leaves is particularly powerful as a cleansing tool.
- Minerals: Raw vegan foods contain 25 to 200 percent more minerals than animal foods Minerals promote good health and are associated with a lowered risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and cancer.
